Sun Exposure and Signs of Aging

Sun Protection in Fort Myers, FL

As the summer months begin to roll in, we begin dreaming of warm, sun-filled beach days. It is often thought that tanned skin, makes us look and feel more beautiful, however, it can lead to greater signs of aging later down the road. This is a result of the cumulative effects of a lifetime sun exposure and other factors such as environmental pollutants. Ultraviolet light, specifically UVA penetrates skin deeply leading to the breakdown and reduction of collagen production, thus, signs of aging. In addition, 80% on UV radiation still penetrates through clouds on an overcast day.

Here, at Florida Skin center, we recommend daily sunscreen use, whether you are driving to work on a cloudy day, or enjoying the beach or pool on a sunny day. When looking for a sunscreen, we recommend mineral ingredients such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and iron oxides for blue light protection from electronics. For added protection, it is beneficial to find a sunscreen with antioxidant properties such as the Colorscience line of products that we carry in office and online. Most importantly, do not forget to apply every 2 hours.
