What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a treatment for skin rejuvenation that utilizes a device with tiny needles that penetrate the skin to create micro-channels. This process is used to stimulate the skin’s natural ability to heal itself while also providing increased absorption of topicals and serums. At our practice, we use a pen-type microneedling device as opposed to a more painful roller used at other dermatology practices.
What is Collagen Induction Therapy?
Collagen Induction Therapy, also known as microneedling, is a treatment for skin rejuvenation that utilizes a device with tiny needles that penetrate the skin to create micro-channels. This process is used to stimulate the skin’s natural ability to heal itself while also providing increased absorption of topicals and serums. At our practice, we use a pen-type microneedling device as opposed to a more painful roller used at other dermatology practices.
How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling is used for improving the appearance of the skin to reduce imperfections. Patients may use microneedling to treat:
- Acne blemishes
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun damaged skin
- Marks and pigmentation
At Florida Skin Center, we apply a topical numbing cream to reduce discomfort. The micro-needling pen is used on the skin to penetrate deep and activate the skin’s healing mode. Then, the TNS Recovery Complex is included, which is a topical product that helps with skin regeneration while calming inflammation and redness following the procedure. When micro-needling is done repeatedly over time, skin disorders are reduced, and in many cases, our patients experience complete clearing of their skin with improved texture and tone.
You are not a candidate for microneedling if you suffer from any of the following conditions:
- Active cold sores
- Pregnant or nursing
How Quickly Can You See Results After Microneedling?
The results depend on the severity of the condition when microneedling is started and the way in which treatment was performed. In most cases, the skin renews every 40 days. Extra stimulation can speed up this process. Most improvements with micro-needling are seen within a few weeks, while others may not see noticeable changes for a few months.
Microneedling works on all skin types, with most patients benefiting from approximately four treatments. Lidocaine topicals ensure comfort during the process. Prior to treatment, patients should avoid products with retinols for one week.
For one week following microneedling, avoid:
- Sun exposure
- Harsh exfoliants
- Scrubbing the skin
What are the Potential Side Effects of Microneedling?
- Dry, tight skin for two to three days
- Redness for two to three days
