What is Laser Hair Removal?

To achieve hair-free skin and address unwanted body hair, many patients turn to laser hair removal. This treatment uses the latest technologies and laser systems to address unwanted hair on the face and body. A gentle laser beam passes into the skin and is absorbed by the hair follicles. The laser energy disables the hair follicle and leaves the surrounding skin unchanged. Prior to treatment, a cooling spray is applied to the skin which protects it while eliminating the unwanted hair.

What Areas Can Be Treated with Laser Hair Removal?

Patients can use laser hair removal anywhere on the body. Common areas include:

  • Legs
  • Underarms
  • Chin
  • Lips
  • Bikini areas
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Face

Laser hair removal can be performed without damaging the pores and special structures of the skin. Most areas, such as the face and bikini line can be treated in under ten minutes, though larger areas require more time. Patients avoid ingrown hairs, allergic reactions, and scarring by using this method as an alternative to other treatment options used at home.

Am I a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Anyone interested in permanent reduction or removal of unwanted hair is a candidate. Darker, finer hair responds better, but this doesn’t mean that patients with light, thicker hair are not able to undergo treatment. It is best for patients to schedule a consultation and evaluation with any of our providers, to determine whether this is the most effective solution for hair removal for them.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

The procedure varies from patient to patient, based on the amount of hair that needs to be treated. Patients wear protective eye wear for safety. The doctor utilizes a special hand piece that delivers the laser light after a coolant has been applied to the skin. Depending on a patient’s pain threshold, discomfort may be mild to moderate, though topical anesthetics can be applied for comfort. After treatment, your skin may be pink and sensitive, but this only lasts for a few hours following the treatment session.

Treatment is done over the course of several sessions because of the hair’s natural growth cycle. Two to three treatments are often recommended to start, with more being necessary if more hair follicles enter the growth cycle. Fewer treatments can result in a reduction of unwanted hair, but not full removal.

What Precautions Should You Take Following Treatment?

After treatment, patients are advised to avoid sun exposure for approximately four to six weeks. Plucking and waxing should not be performed for several weeks prior to treatment. We will inform you of our pre- and post-treatment recommendations during the initial consultation and evaluation at Florida Skin Center.
