The Histology Technician works under general supervision to assist our Mohs surgeon or designee during the grossing of specimens and tissue samples. This individual prepares microscopic tissue samples, slides and performs tissue stains to assist in diagnosis. The Histology Technician is responsible for obtaining and preparing tissue specimens from various body tissues to perform microscopic examination. This position performs and demonstrates proficiency and understanding of grossing the specimen, fixation, cutting, mounting on slides, and staining of tissue samples.

Educational Requirements:

  • Successful completion of an accredited histotechnician program with a background in biology or chemistry; Associate degree in a laboratory science or biology preferred
  • One year in a general histology lab or a Mohs laboratory, if primary focus is support of Mohs surgical practice.
  • Histology Technician (HT) or Histologist Laboratory Technologist (HTL), American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or eligible

Essential Key Requirements:

Grosses tissues, embeds tissues and cuts blocks/tissue performing all technical procedures required to prepare tissue and slides in a timely and accurate manner while maintaining the highest standard of quality in tissue embedding, cutting of blocks (microtomy), H&E staining, special stains and immuno stains (immuno stains where applicable). At this time the lab does not perform immuno stains but we anticipate adding within the next 6 months.

  • Follows all protocols of quality and accuracy.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment in proper working order to ensure consistent, high quality function
  • Monitors equipment functionality and provides timely reports on variables or degraded quality to laboratory management for prompt attention
  • Improves laboratory efficiencies by detecting and communicating technical and logistical problems to laboratory management for resolution
  • Disposes of hazardous chemical waste per regulatory guidelines (limited function – will be assigned to specific trained personnel).
  • Supports with assistance the performance of other laboratory functions/tasks as needed to enhance operational flow.
  • Keeps company integrity by maintaining security and confidentiality of all data, procedures and data system components.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Strong oral and writing communication skills

This is a full time position (Mon-Fri 7:30 am-4:30pm). Pay range is from $25.00- $32.00/hr.depending on level of education, experience and certification

Overall Responsibility:

Handle all aspects of assisting the patients and providers before, during and after their appointments.

Skills and Experience Requirements:

  • High School diploma, but AA or 4 year degree and Certification in Medical Assisting is preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years’ continuous experience in Dermatology
  • Bi- lingual with ability to speak Spanish a plus
  • Excellent analytical skills with attention to detail and quality
  • A Team player who is supportive, approachable and follows directions
