Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that involves an injection of a solution directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel and overtime the vessel fades from view.
A small amount of sclerosing solution is injected into the spider vein. At this point you may experience mild discomfort and cramping for one to two minutes, especially when larger veins are injected. The procedure in general takes 15-20 minutes.
The number of veins injected per session varies and depends on the size and location of the veins. Improvement will be seen with each treatment and on average patients will need 3-4 treatment sessions.
Initially during treatment you may experience some discomfort and light cramping. Later that night you may experience throbbing or aching that generally lasts for 24 hours. Over-the-counter pain medication can be taken at this time to help with discomfort. Some patients may also experience some bruising, however, the supplement Arnica can be taken after each session to minimize bruising.
