Interesting Case — Eczema Craquele |
This patient came to our office with a red itchy rash on both her legs. She stated the rash gets worse during the colder weather and after a hot shower.
What does this patient have?
This patient has a condition known as Eczema Craquele also known as Asteatotic eczema. Eczema craquele is a type of eczema that generally occurs in the elderly. It usually presents with red dry cracked fissured skin that is extremely itchy. The most common areas to be affected are the legs and arms. The exact cause of this type of eczema is unknown, but it has been associated with malnutrition, dehydration and dry skin. If left untreated, these patches can become secondarily infected with bacteria or viruses and lead to cellulitis.
Treatment
The key to treating this condition is prevention by keeping the skin moisturized. Using moisturizers daily especially after a bath can be very helpful. Dr. Badia highly recommends using Cetaphil Soap and cream. Prescription steroid creams and antihistamines can be used when this condition flares.
